Key Largo is in unincorporated Monroe County, so its permits go through the county. Islamorada and Marathon are incorporated municipalities with their own building departments. Work on or along US-1, the Overseas Highway, is in the state right-of-way and needs FDOT permitting.
Because so much of the Keys sits next to nearshore and protected waters, stormwater and erosion control are taken seriously: turbidity barriers, silt fence and keeping runoff and debris out of the water are part of the plan. Drainage options are limited by the shallow water table, so we design for it rather than around it.
