Asphalt repair and pothole patching in Miami and South Florida

A pothole is the last stage of a problem that started under the asphalt. We fix the base, not just fill the hole, so the patch is still flat next rainy season.

Most asphalt failures in South Florida start with water. It gets in through a crack or a low spot, softens the limerock base, and the next heavy truck pushes the asphalt down into it. Cold patch from a bag fills the hole for a few weeks. A real repair saw-cuts square edges around the failed area, removes the asphalt and the soft base below it, rebuilds and compacts the base, tacks the edges and places hot-mix asphalt rolled flush with the surrounding pavement.

We do this every week restoring roads after our own sewer, water and drainage work for primes like MCM on Miami-Dade Water and Sewer projects, where the county inspects every patch. The same crew and the same standard go into a parking lot pothole or a driveway repair.

If the problem is drainage, we will say so. Patching a spot that holds water just moves the failure a few feet. Because we also build drainage, we can regrade the area or add a catch basin as part of the same repair.

Questions we get asked

Why do potholes come back after they are patched?

Usually because the patch went over a wet or soft base, or the edges were never cut and sealed, so water gets back in. A proper repair removes the soft base and seals the joints.

Is cold patch ever OK?

As a temporary fix to make a hole safe until a proper repair, yes. As a permanent repair, no.

Patch or resurface?

If damage is scattered and the rest of the lot is sound, patch. If more than about a quarter of the surface is cracked or patched, milling and resurfacing is usually the better value over time.

How soon can it be driven on?

Hot-mix patches can usually take traffic once they cool, typically the same day.
